Halloween Dream

Ever since the boys were diagnosed, the holidays- especially Halloween- have become a nightmare. Last year we let the older boys trunk or treat a little, and then exchanged their candy for toys. They enjoyed it, but the whole time we were there, I was terrified our little ones would find some candy on the floor or a well intentioned kid would “share”. The older boys are well trained to ask mom or dad if a food is “good for me” before they eat it, but it’s rough when they’re toddlers.
This year we were fortunate enough to find a group called KIFSA, thanks to my friend Kristen. They’re an Idaho support group for families with kids that have food intolerances, allergies, etc. No specific diagnosis is needed. They organized a get together at a local play place called Planet kid on Halloween night. Planet Kid was closed to the public, and the kids dressed up in costumes and ran rampant until it was time to go trick or treating upstairs. Instead of food or candy the boys trick or treated for toys, fake tattoos, etc. that were donated by local businesses. My sons have never had so much fun on Halloween. It was so nice to relax and boycott social food! We liked meeting others in similar situations, and we hope to be able to do it again next year.
Thanks to everyone at KIFSA and Planet Kid that worked so hard to pull this off!
